Hi all, here's my humble offering for the first week of the Zomtober painting challenge. Taken from the D&D Castle Ravenloft boardgame, the mini is "Gravestorm" the drogolich.
There is actually a Zombie Dragon in the Ravenloft box, but it's a bit on the small size for my taste, so I've painted the dracolich to represent a zombie dragon for use in Dragon Rampant and D&D games.
Posed with his "handler" for scale
Not had chance to set up a linky-list yet, but the following link will teleport you over to the pulpcitizen blog, where you'll find the links to others taking up the Zomtober challenge....

That is an absolute monster of a model! How big would you say it is length-wise? The height is pretty impressive, and those red eyes really give it a menacing look!
ReplyDeleteCheers Ivor, he (she?)'s about 5 inches long thanks to the tail being wrapped forwards on the sculpt - nicely imposing on the table but without the extra length of the tail to worry about.
DeleteGreat work Greg, the eyes really stand out on him
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave, the eyes were simply done by priming the sockets white to help "lift" the bright red, the outer area was over-painted a dark red which was also given a 'Strong Tone' wash.
DeleteTerrific work Greg. Love the eyes and what an incredible size he is too!! Awesome start to Zomtober :-)
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Simon :-)
DeleteI had the best part of a day to get it painted, photographed, then posted - really chuffed I hit the deadline!
Wow I'd hate to meet that thing in a dark place or come to think on it in a bright place either :)
ReplyDeleteCracking paint job Greg.
Cheers Frank :-)
DeleteIt's very rare for what I have in my head before making a start, to actually resemble the finished article ;-)
It looks like the eyes have it. Very nice Greg, I know size isn't everything but it does add scale.
ReplyDeleteThanks John - you're right "size isn't everything", but painting this mini made me realise how much easier 54mm figures would be with my failing eyesight ;-)
DeleteHe is a terrifically detailed and sculpted figure and as I found out in one game of "Ravenloft" a genuine party killer! BTW, his handler looks cute!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Bryan - once I'd worked a red/purple through all the available 'holes' to get to his innards, I was happy enough that the sculpt WOULD look like the skeleton was at least partly covered by rotting flesh.
DeleteI haven't looked at Dragon Rampant to see if an undead dragon is already "statted up" - so that's tonights bedtime reading sorted :-)
Fab model it looks brilliant!
ReplyDeleteThanks Simon, I managed to find the Ravenloft boardgame "pre-loved" on ebay, and bought it more-or-less just for the minis. Most are painted now, and I'm more than happy with the sculpts :-)
DeleteThat, good sir, is NOT a 'humble' offering. Excellent stuff!
ReplyDelete*Blush* Thanks Kieron - I'd better sharpen my brushes ready for this weeks effort after paise like that! :-)
DeleteNice start! Your taking me back to the moment in Game of Thrones when the Winter King reanimates the dragon!
ReplyDeleteThat was one of my favourite segments of the series Terry! :-)
DeleteFrom the moment we saw the chains dragging the body out from under the ice, through to the Winter King riding to war in the season finale - thanks for the memory :-)
Excellent work TWA; I thing the first zombie dragon that i can recall in seven years of Zomtober - cracking choice! :)
ReplyDeleteMany thanks PC :-)
DeleteWow, a "first" - purely accidental, but I'm very proud! :-)
Terrific stuff Greg! Amazing model and great work
ReplyDeleteCheers Andy!
DeleteSnatching enough time to do a little painting for Zomtober is pretty much the only "hobby time" I'm getting this month, so you could say I'm channeling my frustration into the project ;-)
By the size of that thing it should count as more than one zombie, I think. Still, job done!
ReplyDeleteCheers Hugh - in Dragon Rampant he'll count as a "unit", so you're absolutely right! :-)
DeleteMildly disturbing (in a good way).
ReplyDeleteCheers Joe, and (I think) I know what you mean ;-)
DeleteJobs a good 'un.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Phil, much appreciated :-)
DeleteO nice! Never seen that model before, but I really like him and you've painted him up a treat!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for the kind comment Dai, and welcome to my little corner of the Blogiverse :-)
