Trouble at'Mill

Just a quick 'heads up' that my hobby time is temporarily on hold.

My brother in law was rushed into hospital on Monday and it's "all hands to the pump" - unfortunately, regular visits mean a 140 mile round trip.
Apologies in advance for the dip in blog posts, and though I'll try my best, I might not get around to commenting on fellow bloggers sites until things return to "normal".

Just remembered something else - has the "notification via email" that someone's posted on Blogger completely disappeared, or do I have to reset something somewhere??
Not having the notification is an inconvenience because I like to acknowledge comments asap, but it also proved to be a great tool warning if spammers had posted "inappropriate" content so i could remove it (before inadvertently breaking Bloggers rules about "hosting" such comments).

Just to end on a lighter note, Saturday saw me and SWMBO "broadening our horizons" by attending a local Steampunk event at Papplewick Pumping Station - here's just a few photo's.......

TTFN, and thanks for visiting my humble blog. I'll see y'all just as soon as I can!

  1. Sorry to hear about your Brother in law, hope he has a speedy recovery.
There seems to be a varying degree to Bloggers update, that seems to effect some more than others, Roger for example now comes up as Anonymous no matter what he's tried to fix it.
Great pictures from the steam punk event, and wonderfully diverse costumes.
We'll be here when you get back mate, go steady with all that travelling

    1. Many thanks Dave - the hospital have got him 'stable' and tests for the best way forward are ongoing.
Bryan has emailed me a "fix" for the email notifications which is very straightforward and seems to be working... I'll include it in my next post since I'll know for sure by then.
The Steampunk event was a very pleasant surprise. A really nice bunch of people with a very laid back attitude :-)
The travelling is a bit of a grueller - even though I do a lot of driving normally, it's tiring... hence the 'day off' today ;-)

  2. Greg, I echo Dave's comments and fully understand. Take as much time out as you need.

Fortunately I do have a solution to your Blogger problem and have sent you a separate e-mail with a fix that worked for me.

  3. I cannot comment on people's lack of comments, as at the moment (excepting this one) all I'm doing is lurking on people's blogs while I get myself sorted. Cheers for the heads up as to why you'll be quiet for a time, now we'll know that you're okay and not to start worrying.

Yep, comments are still jiggered (that's the polite technical term). I've been keeping up to date with somebody else trying to fix the issue. Google thinks its fixed, but it doesn't seem to be.

Anyway, what we all really want to know is, what did you dress up as for the Steampunk fair. And was it a homemade costume (there was a fellow blogger - Pendragon Without - who got into Steampunk costume making and attending such events, but he no longer blogs, unfortunately).

    1. Thanks so much Roy - I know you're taking 'time out' from the blogs, so I much appreciate you commenting here. I also sincerely hope you're "getting there" on your own road to recovery buddy.
I'll edit the post to include a "selfie" to answer your question ;-)

  4. Real life has a way of constantly getting in the way of our hobby, but it always has to come first. Hope your brother gets better soon and of course the blogging community is always understanding in these situations.
We'll be waiting patiently for your return.

    1. Cheers Joe - don't it just?!
Fortunately this has happened just as we've hit a 'slack' period with work and we can muck with the visits etc.
It's just a shame that I'd previously earmarked the time for a 'hobby blitz' ;-)

  5. All the best to your brother-in-law. I'm having the exact same problem with notifications as you are, and it's extremely frustrating. Just like you, if someone actually takes the time to not only read a post I put up but also comments on it, I absolutely want to acknowledge that with even the simplest of a reply of "thank you".

    1. Thanks Ivor - I've passed on well wishes from my friends and they are much appreciated.
Bryan kindly sent me an email with instructions to fix the lack of notifications.
Basically you need to remove your email address in Blogger settings, then re-enter it which triggers an email to yourself inviting you to "subscribe" to your blog and receive notifications via email.
(I'll include Bryan's excellent step-by-step instructions in my next post) :-)

    1. Cheers Frank - I'm afraid there's no chance of a "speedy" recovery, but he's stable at the moment and the hospital are looking at ways to try and get some improvement.
It sounds like you're the same level as me when it comes to computer literacy ;-)

  7. Hi Greg sorry to hear about the brother in law, hope he's ok. I'm struggling with internet but Michael A put a comment on my blog, a couple of posts ago, that might help.
I've not had chance to see if it works.
    Cheers

    1. Many thanks John, I'll have a look at Michael's post, but I've received a fix from Bryan which seems to have worked :-)
You might be "struggling with the interweb", but you're doing better than I can manage when I'm away from home, so well done buddy :-)

    1. Many Thanks SW - initially the doctors thought he'd had a stroke, but after a week of tests it's now been confirmed as MS.
Just a case of getting the "coping mechanisms" in place now.

The Steampunk crowd are a great bunch, and it was an enjoyable day out - definitely will go to more whenever we get the chance! I might even indulge in some some 'Victorian Science Fiction' gaming in the future as well ;-)
