Serendipities

noun: serendipity; plural noun: serendipities
the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.

It's always nice whenever Lady Luck smiles in your direction, and since I've not got much in the way of gaming or modelling topics to post this week (I'm stuck in a couple of those tedious projects that aren't worth posting until significant progress has been made!), I thought I'd share my recent good fortune.
First off, a big "THANK YOU" to Michael who, by chance made a comment on a previous post and brought 'Donnybrook' to my attention!
I'd completely overlooked them as contenders for 17thC skirmish rules (mainly because they're primarily aimed at the period 1660 - 1760), but as soon as I saw that they use a card driven turn system I thought they'd be worth a try - and reading through so far, they're now heavyweight contenders for my project!

Next up, whenever SWMBO sends me to town on the weekly "shop-pain" trip, I call into the charity shops to scour the toy sections looking for anything that might be useful (most of the toy cars I use are sourced this way!) and spotted this...
A quick check of the contents showed that it was 100% complete, so I parted with the princely sum of £1.99 - a bargain even if I only use the two droids in my Bladerunner campaign!!

Finally, and I've left the worst for last (but I still count it as a "stroke of luck"), my debit card expired at the end of October and I've just got round to registering the replacement card details with Paypal.
I very rarely have cause to visit my Paypal home page, so I had no idea that I'd received an invoice for £2.99 from Gringo40 (one of the two suppliers I mentioned in my previous post) - From what I can make out, their checkout page hadn't added the cost of postage when I paid for the items in my basket!
So, if I'm right, this would explain the non-delivery, but no direct email or even a note with the Paypal invoice by way of explanation is pretty poor in my opinion.
Anyhow, I've paid the invoice, so the clock is still ticking (or should that be "calendar  pages turning") awaiting delivery!

Now, after that and on a brighter note, as mentioned in the intro to this waffle, it's been a poor week for modelling output, but I did get this Reaper android done for "Bladerunner".......
.......and this mob of Warlord Games angry villagers for the ECW project.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable bonfire night (SWMBO made some "Toffee Apple Pie Cupcakes" - yum!)

  1. Cheers for posting that Donnybrook contents page. It has been on my radar for some time now, but seeing the faction "Tribal" listed I'm now going to look into it further. I'm quite interested in the post-Great Zimbabwe kingdoms and their dealings with other Africans and the Portuguese, so I might just take a closer look at Donnybrook.

    1. Early days Roy, but even so from what I've read, I think these rules would fit the bill.
Mechanics aside, the production qualities are first rate and to say they're lavishly illustrated would be an understatement!
I'll crack on with my read-through and let you know more asap :-)

  2. Well I'm thrilled to have been of help. You will have to tell me all about it when you have worked through the rules! :)

Toffee Apple Cup Cakes - wow!

    1. You've been an immense help Michael - these look to be a real gem of a ruleset, and I'll certainly be reporting back in detail as soon as I can!
(The cup cakes were a little TOO nice and I ate more than I should!)

  3. Getting the complete "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" starter set for such a cheap price was an absolute bargain. What a lucky find.

The Reaper Android is a superb figure. I recently posted her on my blog, where she received a lot of favourable comments.

As for bonfire night, I would ban the sale of fireworks to the general public if I was in charge. I much prefer Halloween. However, your cupcakes look delicious!

    1. Thanks Bryan - the Star Wars game was an absolute steal at the price and just shows the kind of thing that can turn up in the charity shops!
It was seeing the Reaper android on your blog that prompted me to order one :-) I've painted mine to look "well worn" as an older model than the Nexus series of 'skin jobs' are ;-)
As for banning public sales of fireworks, I totally agree as far as the larger things are concerned. Small "back garden / family" types are perhaps OK, but the HUGE (and LOUD) variety are simply too often abused and cause too many problems IMHO.

  4. Despite having 'nothing' to post about (we've all been there), I really enjoyed this post. Donnybrook actually put me offby using a card system, but it is poular so can't be too bad.

    1. Cheers Joe. I've got a fair bit of modelling 'on the go', but you might have already gathered that I'm not really one for doing "Work In Progress" posts. A bit lazy of me, especially when I enjoy seeing other peoples WIP ;-)
From personal experience I've so far always found that any set of rules with a card driven mechanic just naturally lend themselves to solo play, so I'm really hoping the same will apply to Donnybrook :-)

    1. Thanks Tim, it was a real stroke of luck with the Star Wars game! The Reaper android was part of a small but eclectic mix of mini's I ordered - the rest are currently "under the brush" ;-)
