Breaking News!

If you've been following along with this little project and fancy having a go yourself, the author Joseph McCullough has just made an announcement on his blog after speaking to the publishers Osprey Games, in view of the current isolation measures affecting us gamers.

They are giving away pdf copies of Frostgrave and Dark Alchemy! Check it out here >

What a coincidence, and I think you'll agree, what a star!

Since the rules are completely "miniature agnostic", and you can use whatever terrain you have on hand, a ruler and a couple of D20 are really all the extras you need - so there's DEFINITELY no 'ulterior motive' attached to this amazing gift, just a genuine act of kindness in these troubled times.
Well done Joseph!!

I'll be playing my first game tonight - the embossed wallpaper didn't quite have enough definition (though I reckon it would have worked better if I'd taken it outside and used a rattle can to do the base coat), but it's dry now and the terrain is set up and ready to go.

Stay safe, and see you soon with a full write up of this first game.

  1. Good shout out Greg, I'll go get them. Thanks.

Remind me - did you say where the walls came from? They look good for what you're trying to achieve as does the base. Did you dry brush it to bring out the deffinition or was that not possible because there was none?
    Cheers

    1. The walls are from what I THINK was a "failed kickstarter" by Maki Games. It's called the Modular Underground Dungeon Project (no, I'd never heard of it either), and a real shame that they didn't succeed and expand it.
I was really lucky and picked up a set from our local trader - they do appear on ebay, but seem VERY expensive on there :-(

As I suspected, the relief of that pattern was too low for effective drybrushing, I'd primed it black, attempted a dry brush, then went for applying a diluted grey (strong-ish wash)applied by damping a cloth with it and "rubbing out" the failed dry brush. Not brilliant, but it'll do :-)

  2. Nice looking set Greg, good luck with the first adventure :)
Also as I can't get the download to work I was wondering is it possible for someone to send me the pdf, as their free anyway its not like we'd be doing something wrong.

    1. Cheers Phil - I've added a bit of "set dressing" prior to the game, just to try and add to the aesthetic (or tart it up a bit) :-)

  4. Thanks for the info, Greg. I've got the two items in my Osprey "eLibrary", but as with Frank above, it's refusing currently to download - probably because we're all trying to do it at the same time.

And Vagaond beat me to it, as I was going to ask about the walls too. I remember Maki Games doing this, along with a proposed modular Gothic Sci-Fi system, but it obviously failed. Shame, as they do look rather good.

    1. I'm sure it's just 'volume of traffic' on the website Jez.
The Maki site still lists some of the sci-fi terrain, but absolutely nothing about the fantasy dungeon project. Googling around only turns up articles and images of the base set, and no mention anywhere about any of the stretch goal expansions :-(
Also, I found a kickstarter 'community' site for the project where the only conversations were about non delivery and unanswered emails, which confirmed my suspicion about it being "failed"
The base set is still well worth picking up if it can be found at a good price, since it can obviously be used alongside most other terrain sets out there.

  5. Good looking set-up and the walls are an excellent addition.
I'll proabably end up downloading the rules too, whilst resisting the urge to start yet another new system/project!

    1. Cheers Joe, but beware - the 'system' is so very straight forward that once you pick it up, you'll be sorely tempted to give it a try.....

  6. The set up looks great Greg, and that was a great thing that they did with the rules

    1. Thanks Dave :-)
There's quite a lot of solo orientated material being made available across the web at the moment, all heavily discounted if not totally free. As you say, it's "a great thing", not only to cheer up housebound wargamers who can't attend their usual social gatherings - but it will do wonders by introducing yet more players to the delights of playing with themselves ;-)

    1. Many thanks Simon, and I was only too happy to share the link - I thought it would be more courteous to link the authors blog announcement than directly to the download :-)
I hope the Osprey site makes the pdf's available faster than the supermarkets can restock toilet roll, paracetamol, pasta, etc, etc ;-)
