After The Battle

The Vampyre ordered the persuit of the fleeing All Hallows survivors, instructing Delcroix to "harvest as many 'suitable' men as possible to replace the lost Nocterlinger" and then "infest" the village. Mikhail had been injured in the battle, and returned immediately to Fernbeck House to tend his wounds.
As evening set in, the Trayned Band and militia were no more - either dead or in chains being delivered to a fate worse than death at the hands of Doktor Nevrinkhoff
and as the unheard screams started in the dungeon below Fernbeck House, the plague rats were released in the streets of All Hallows. By morning, any remaining villagers will have succumbed to the zombie virus.
But wait!
Did I imply there were NO survivors?
When the route began, Lieutenant Hargreaves and one of his musketeers were helping a wounded colleague off the moor. They would certainly have been caught if it were not for Dr Hugo, who himself had sustained a leg injury and had taken up a position of hiding. Hugo called them over and the four of them hid as the persuit passed them by on its way to All Hallows.
Much later in the day, the small group emerged from their hiding place in an overgrown ditch, and knowing it would be unwise to return to the village, they set off towards the neighboring village of Harthill.
As they made slow progress along the road, it was a huge relief when they spotted a small cottage up ahead. Lt Hargreaves couldn't believe their luck when the door was opened by a goodwife -
they had found safety for the moment............. or had they????

To be continued.

When I posted the progress reports of Brad and his group in the zombie apocalypse along with the goings-on with Captain Jessop and the Trayned Band, I chose to follow up with the "Battle Of Skag Moor" because I thought it would be a simple encounter which would allow me to close that chapter of 'England Upturned' with a single AAR and move swiftly on to the zompocalypse.   Oops!
These things do have a habit of taking on a life of their own don't they?!
It was when I was considering the casualties from the battle (for campaign purposes, a mini removed from play isn't necessarily "dead" - he may simply be too injured to continue fighting) that I ended up with this little group of survivors, so of course, I just HAD to find out what happens to them!

Thanks for visiting, and if you're patiently waiting for news of Brad, Hannah and the rest of the group, I promise they'll be appearing here again soon.

  1. I want more, much more... on pain of Zombie infliction you MUST do more and carry on this blighted tale. I really want to know what happens next <grins<

I especially like that you have made a way to determine if `the dead` remain that way or turn into more brothers and sisters of the horde, and potential injury charts for returning heroes and heroines adds such a cool element to all games of this sort, doesn't it :-)

    1. Many thanks Stevie, I've noticed a tendency to paint crosses on the doors around where we live as nightfall approaches - I'd better do whatever I can to avoid any zombie infestation (though I fear it's too late for my games room!), and will of course continue the tale ;-)

True "skirmish" rules combat results usually give us clear indication of whether characters are 'dead' or 'wounded' after falling in combat. As for larger scale encounters, it's still important for the narrative, so all I've done is stolen ideas from various "campaign rules", distilled them, and shoe-horned them into my own games ;-)
It certainly helps with campaign logistics in a simple way :-)

    2. Oh dear lord, if its reached the stage of white crosses on the doors as twilight approaches, that`s not a good sign. I cannot hold out much hope for you I am afraid. Best you try reverse events and put the world right in your games room I think ^^

Stealing and borrowing ideas from various campaign rules (or any rules full stop) is very old school, yeeeey!! I`m proud of ya.

  2. Now that I`m all caught up and up to date with this ongoing campaign and story, I am able to understand all its little intricacies and who is whom among the myriad of characters and protagonists. I`m enjoying it immensely and finally able to follow along with close interest.

    1. Thanks Tarot, and you deserve a 'gold star' for working your way through to this point - things have been a bit disjointed thanks to the lack of ANY planning, so it's simply grown in the telling ;-)
It seems to have "found its feet" now though and I hope you continue to enjoy following along, be forewarned though - your activities over on The Game Cupboard have had an impact and changes are afoot :-)

    2. No gold star needed, it was a joyful delight. Oh my, what a responsibility **gulp** I must be extra vigilant to make sure my next input on TGC is as useful as possible. I have an article in mind that will be perfect for you I think. I`ll try get to it and post it tomorrow or soon after :-))

    1. Hiya Hils, and thank you very much indeed :-)
As for Scarlet Heroes, it's had a MASSIVE influence on the Sengoku campaign! I can't thank Stevie enough (though I'll try my best).

    2. You know, I`m not one to encourage people to spend money on hobby things (never did consider it a prideful medal of honour to get others to buy the same things we have bought) but in the case of Scarlet Heroes, if you REALLY like it, I would highly recommend a hardcover print on demand copy from drivethrurpg.com as it is a thing of absolute beauty; nice easy to read big writing (I like a book that has writing covering all the page and not an inch and a half each side of blank paper), and is so much easier to read and a joy to use in print format. The book is so full of useful charts which you will refer to often, it makes a print copy a real asset and a pleasure to own.

    3. Yeah actually I would confirm that. Normally I would have no problem just using a printed out PDF and simply putting the pages into a plastic loose leaf folder. However I find the writing on the PDF version to be a little small, made worse by lots of blank unused space left and right of each page. This isn't the case with the printed book copy, and the font is big, easy to read (on nice quality thick paper) and the writing goes all the way to the edge of each page. The book is well bound and so opens and lays nice and flat, making it a pleasure to read, keep close by and handy to look at and check the various tables found within the book. Its also a very lovely book and I have no problem at all promoting this as a very worthy purchase.

    4. Thanks muchly for the advice guys, I've just had words with the financial dictator who tells me that it will be a "Fathers Day present" from the cats :-)

    1. Much appreciated Michael, and I'll let you know asap - of course, I know what MIGHT happen next, but until the dice start rolling it's anyones guess :-)

  5. Greg, I'm so delighted you're continuing this campaign. I do like the idea of the four survivors hooking up and waiting until the right moment until seeking sanctuary elsewhere. But is that "good wife" really good or is she an agent of the Count? I know what I'm hoping for! :-)

    1. Cheers Bryan, I can say with (some) confidence that all of the campaigns are still "running" - it's trying to figure out the "best" way of featuring them. At the moment I'm just playing them as they take my fancy and posting the AAR's straight away.
If I could get ahead of myself, maybe I could 'stockpile' AAR's and then post them in a more coherent order??

It was an easy guess as to where you'd prefer the goodwife's allegiances to lie ;-) At this moment in time though, I honestly have no idea myself! (but I'm aware of all the options!!)

    1. Oh there's plenty more to come Joe - even if the All Hallows trayned band had been totally wiped out, there's plenty more events going on in the background to keep the campaign going :-)

  8. Hi Greg I'm pleased to see this continue but the side of evil seems to have the upper hand at the moment. Is the good wife one of the Warlord range? She looks a useful character.

    1. Many thanks John - the vampyre might SEEM to have the upper hand, but he can only really survive if he can maintain the "masquerade". The fact that a few survivors have got away from the encounter could spell disaster for him.

The good wife is the "wench" from Black Cat Bases, in their civilians/townfolk range.
If you've not looked through their online CATalogue before, you're in for a treat :-)

    1. Many thanks Ivor, and may I take this opportunity to offer sincere congratulations for Liverpool's recent win - I'm no big footie fan myself, but it's always good when a northern side sticks one over the southerners :-)

Those rat swarm bases were included in the minis for a D&D Castle Ravenloft boardgame I was lucky to snag secondhand on ebay.

    1. Cheers Simon, the "characters" are from Black Cat Bases, the musketeers are Warlord Games and their officer is (I think) one of Col. Bills, while the plague doctor is from Warmonger - phew! I had to do some serious 'revision' to answer that one ;-)

    2. Oh! I think the "doktor" is from one of the North Star ranges!!
